“To me, wine is so much more than liquid in a bottle. It is our sunshine, our water, a team that nurtures and appreciates the daily changes of the vintage, and a lot of love!” – Marnelle
IN THE VINES
This has been a beautiful spring and a great way to start off the 2014 vintage! We had bud break around March 20th this year. Easter came pretty late this spring. We had a couple early mornings of light frost and our vineyard frost fans assisted in frost damage prevention. Our 2014 crop is so beautiful! My dad always told me that “a great start to a new vintage is all dependent on how the vines were treated at the end of the previous vintage”. We strive to take good care of the vines especially after they give us such beautiful fruit. The love of the vines at the end of last season is really showing in how incredible they look this year.
We moved the home of our guinea fowl (“the coop”) from the middle of the vineyard to the east border of the vines. We still have the best pest control ever, but now have no obstruction to one of the most beautiful views in East Texas! (I’m not at all biased.)
IN THE WINERY
It is blending and bottling season right now! We have our 2011 Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot all being brought up from three years of aging and being prepared to bottle. The 2011 vintage is so lush with supple tannins and offers the classic Kiepersol comfort! The 2011 vintage will be bottled and aged for at least another six months before release. All our wines get delicate and gentle aging at each stage ensuring you get to taste them at their prime.
Another wine we are very excited about is our new Bordeaux style blend. Look for that release late summer/early fall. Our 2012 and 2013 vintages of reds are comfortably aging in oak and really coming along beautifully. The 2012 is starting to develop well rounded tannins, and really building a good concentration from the angel’s share process. The 2013 vintage still showcases its youthful tannins, but they certainly will soften over the next year of aging.
IN THE TASTING ROOM
This spring didn’t just mark a new vintage for our vines, but a new era in our tasting room. After 15 years in the original brick winery building, we have moved about...30 yards to the north! We now have a brand new tasting room and patio with a beautiful view overlooking our original vineyard. Our wine selection in the tasting room is the most vast that it has ever been. We recently released all our small batch straight varietals, such as Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Mourvedre and Zinfandel. We also have our delicious Stainless line which is made with no oak aging, giving wine drinkers an opportunity to taste the pure expression of Kiepersol terroir. It is so much fun to come by and taste our Stainless Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah right beside the same oak- aged varieties.
